<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">My siblings and I getting a first hand look at Snippy.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Any of us who lived in
Colorado in the late 1960s will probably remember Snippy the Horse. I certainly
do. I was ten years old in 1967 when the news of Snippy hit the air waves.
Snippy was a horse that killed under strange circumstances – still strange to
this day according to several articles. My siblings and I were fascinated by
all the talk of UFOs surrounding the mysterious mutilation of poor Snippy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">We lived in southeastern
Colorado and Snippy was from a farm south of Alamosa, Colorado, so it was close
enough we heard a lot about it. Snippy, a three year old horse was found dead
with all the flesh stripped from his head and neck. An autopsy revealed
unexplainable missing organs. There were unusual signs in the field around him
and several people throughout the area reported seeing what seemed to be UFOs
during the days surrounding this event.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">It seems there were plenty
of official investigations but nothing conclusive ever turned up. Snippy’s body
was autopsied and studied and eventually his skeleton became a tourist
attraction. The pathologist that autopsied him shortly after he was found, said
there were no signs of entrance in the body but the abdominal, brain and spinal
cavities were empty.<a href="file:///C:/Users/MARTIN/Desktop/snippy/SnippyTheHorse.docx#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn1;" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="mso-special-character: footnote;"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">[1]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></span></a> This and the fact that
high radiation levels were found in the area caused the University of
Colorado’s Air Force sponsored UFO study to call in a nuclear physicist, a
psychologist and an animal expert to investigate the area,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and talk with area residents about their UFO
sightings.<span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="mso-special-character: footnote;"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><a href="file:///C:/Users/MARTIN/Desktop/snippy/SnippyTheHorse.docx#_ftn2" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn2;" title="">[2]</a></span></span><a href="file:///C:/Users/MARTIN/Desktop/snippy/SnippyTheHorse.docx#_ftn2" title=""><!--[endif]--></a></span></span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

veterinarian who assembled the bones insisted that he found a couple of .22
caliber bullet holes in the hind quarter bones. </span><span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Snippy spent a few years on
the sidewalk in front of the Chamber of Commerce and according to the attached
articles, was in a private museum for a while. She also spent years in an
abandoned house somewhere before her bones were offered on eBay. The seller
wanted $50,000 but an ownership dispute ended the auction.</span><span class="MsoFootnoteReference" style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "tahoma" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><a href="file:///C:/Users/MARTIN/Desktop/snippy/SnippyTheHorse.docx#_ftn3" name="_ftnref3" style="font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;" title="">[3]</a></span></span></span></div>

UFOs and spacemen.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

It began as part of the Mennonite Sanitorium (a TB facility) in Swink, Colorado in 1915 with the first class graduating in 1918. When the new <a href="http://gameo.org/index.php?title=Mennonite_Hospital_and_Sanitarium_(La_Junta,_Colorado,_USA)" target="_blank">Mennonite Hospital and Sanitorium </a>was built in LaJunta, the training school was moved as well. In 1946 it became an independent institution the had well over 300 graduates. The last class was the class of 1958. More about the school's history can be read on the <a href="http://gameo.org/index.php?title=La_Junta_Mennonite_School_of_Nursing_(La_Junta,_Colorado,_USA)" target="_blank">Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online</a> (GAMEO) site.<br />
<br />
My mother attended the school and graduated with the class of 1955. Her father's sister, <a href="http://gameo.org/index.php?title=Swartzendruber,_Maude_Barbara_Egli_(1903-1990)" target="_blank">Maude Egli Swartzendruber</a>, was for a time, the director at the school and wrote about the school in her book, "The Lamp in the West." Aunt Maude influenced a lot of young women, including Mom, to go into nursing.<br />

Mom and Dad met while they were both attending Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas. After Hesston, Mom went to LaJunta for training and Dad went into alternative service (1W) with the selective service. He tried to get assigned to LaJunta; several young Mennonite guys were assigned there, including Mom's brother, Tom Egli, but Dad was assigned to Pueblo, Colorado. The next three years they dated long distance and wrote almost daily letters. Nursing students were not allowed to be married.<br />
<br />
I don't know if all the nursing classes were as close as Mom's but I don't think any group could have been closer. They kept in touch through a 'circle letter' that came as a large packet of letters that Mom loved to read. Then she would take out her old letter, write a new one and send it off again. Every few years the group would get together for a reunion. We learned to know many of her classmates and their families over the years.<br />

This is my grandmother, Edna Peterson Egli. She was 15 years old. With those stripes, I can't help but wonder if she was wearing red, white and blue?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SvcQSXBzJ9E/VZhDkDjT0SI/AAAAAAAADu0/kOPId5tqwUQ/s1600/PET2-15-Edna-July4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SvcQSXBzJ9E/VZhDkDjT0SI/AAAAAAAADu0/kOPId5tqwUQ/s320/PET2-15-Edna-July4.jpg" width="173" /></a></div>
<br />
As I was looking through the file of photos of her, I came across one of her with a car. I knew she'd won a car in 1922 - I wrote about it in her <a href="http://rita-chipschunksagenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/birthday-bio-edna-amanda-peterson-egli.html" target="_blank">bio which you can read here.</a><br />
<br />
Although the notes I found about Edna say the car was a 1922 Ford, I found this picture of Edna with a car that may or may not be the one she won. The photo is dated 1922 but as you can see, the car is a Chevrolet. If you search the internet for pictures of 1922 Chevrolet, you will find some nice images of this car. I would like to find a newspaper article from when she won the car - you would think there would be one since it was won for selling newspaper subscriptions. Anyone out there have access to 1922 Manson Journal?<br />

The group included those three and my Aunt Judi, my mom, my sister, Nancy, my brother, Arlin and I. We walked in a shallow creek bed for a good while and I think the reason the whole event sticks with me so well, is because we all found ourselves covered in leeches and had to peel them off of ourselves. Anyway, I found a few old slide photos of that day. My guess is it was the very early 1960s.<br />

I was googling for an obituary when this blog popped up. It is called "Too Long in the Wind" and it is part of <a href="http://www.pawneerock.org/index.html">Pawnee Rock.org</a>. This blog has years of interesting tidbits about the area of Kansas that many of my ancestors lived in. While I never lived in Pawnee Rock, I have visited there on numerous occasions and have visited the cemeteries and taken many photographs. (see <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/">Find A Grave</a> for my contributions in Barton County, Kansas). <br />
<br />
The Mennonite settlement near Pawnee Rock has long been a part of my research and I've found I have a connection to almost everyone in the Bergthal and the Dundee Cemeteries.<br />
<br />
This blog, by the website creator Leon Unruh, is both historical and contemporary and makes the community come alive. He links to other articles and obituaries and adds comments and stories for the people and places he is familiar with. He includes photos - old and new and often includes letters and emails from other people. He talks about the town and how it has changed over the years. And of course he blogged about the <a href="http://rita-chipschunksagenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2013/06/those-places-thursday-bergthal.html" target="_blank">Bergthal Mennonite Church closing</a>.<br />
<br />
The whole Pawnee Rock website is interesting and they even have scanned the entire 1950 yearbook from the high school!<br />
<br />
Perhaps such a blog exists for your family's town! It is worth searching for. And if not, maybe it would be a great blog to start!<br />
<br />
Thanks, Leon, for bring Pawnee Rock, Kansas to life for me.Rita Schmidt Martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01842537325240920852noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4358187266296538391.post-74231131645899044942014-06-19T07:30:00.000-05:002014-06-19T07:30:02.167-05:00Those Places Thursday - Kansas MCC Relief Sale, Hutchinson, Kansas - "The Junk Man"The<a href="http://kansas.mccsale.org/" target="_blank"> Mennonite Relief Sale</a> in Hutchinson at the State Fair Grounds has been a part of my family for many, many years. I remember going when the auction was in the old sale barn. My grandparents, Beatrice and Harvey Schmidt, were almost always there. It was a time to see people from all around the state and even outside the state that you hadn't seen in awhile.<br />
<br />
The sale is a charity sale - with all proceeds going to<a href="http://mcc.org/" target="_blank"> MCC</a> - the missions branch of the Mennonite churches. There was always a quilt auction with quilts made and donated by churches and individuals. Plenty of other things get auctioned off as well, but the quilt auction has been a big draw for some time. But maybe even more of a draw than the quilts, is the food. Because, while not everyone can afford to bid on a quilt, everyone can enjoy the food.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VPlrj7IzmFc/U5fM1AQnn-I/AAAAAAAADkU/fV_avtxGbrI/s1600/MCC+sale+2009+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VPlrj7IzmFc/U5fM1AQnn-I/AAAAAAAADkU/fV_avtxGbrI/s1600/MCC+sale+2009+%25283%2529.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We attended and enjoyed the sale during the years my grandparents were alive, but after they died, the sale took on a new meaning. My dad had worked out an agreement with his dad, Harvey, regarding the years and acres of accumulation of stuff. Grandpa Harvey loved auctions and there was more than a little stuff piled up on his farm. Someday I'll write more about that.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RF3p_OjOtAM/U5fJCd28fnI/AAAAAAAADi0/gt2ZN40Q8dM/s1600/Early+Years+at+the+MCC+Sale.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RF3p_OjOtAM/U5fJCd28fnI/AAAAAAAADi0/gt2ZN40Q8dM/s1600/Early+Years+at+the+MCC+Sale.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of the first years</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
But for now, it is enough to say that Dad and Grandpa came to an agreement that what the family did not want, could be sold at auction with the proceeds going to MCC. So after Grandpa died, Dad took on the project of taking several trailer loads of stuff to the MCC sale in Hutchinson every year and selling it. Dad was fondly known as the "junk man" at the sale and people looked for him and his stuff every year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3AYJeGsEYhI/U5fOIQwXINI/AAAAAAAADko/0hH3va0vLrM/s1600/MCC+sale+2009+(11).JPG&container=blogger&gadget=a&rewriteMime=image%2F*" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3AYJeGsEYhI/U5fOIQwXINI/AAAAAAAADko/0hH3va0vLrM/s1600/MCC+sale+2009+(11).JPG" height="184" width="200" /></a></div>
He sold old tools, wheelbarrows, buckets, wagons, tractor seats, pumps, jacks . . .the list goes on and on. Any number of things in just about any condition. Many people used these rusty items as yard art. Occasionally someone would find something they'd been looking for - a particularly collectible tool or hood ornament.<br />

These pictures were taken in some of the last years and by the looks of it, they were taken at the end of the two-day sale.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
One year they made the news in the Hutchinson paper's coverage of the sale.<br />
<br />
The sale was always a great place for family from all over the country to meet up and have fun. There are lots more stories and pictures from years of going to sales but I'll save those for another time.</div>

I have learned things about my parents since their deaths because I have been going through old pictures and letters and miscellaneous documents. It has been an interesting journey and there are so many things I wish I could ask them.<br />

<br />
Some had lots of photographs and some were pictures that she had cut from magazines.<br />

Fortunately she wrote about the photos and the people in them.<br />

Generally they were people that my parents worked with and/or we went to church with. Over the years many of them married and moved away but I remember them as being part of our family.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7B8FfM5V2Po/Uv-6LQfPkgI/AAAAAAAADYo/1T5aRgRybAE/s1600/Nursing+Class+1955.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7B8FfM5V2Po/Uv-6LQfPkgI/AAAAAAAADYo/1T5aRgRybAE/s1600/Nursing+Class+1955.jpg" height="320" width="236" /></a>One of those was Martha King. Martha was in nurses training at LaJunta Mennonite School of Nursing with Mom. She was older than many of the students but was in Mom's class - the class of 1955. After they graduated, Mom married and settled in Greensburg, Kansas. Martha, like many other Mennonite nurses, got a job at the hospital in Greensburg. At that time the hospital, Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, was run by the Mennonite Church.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SoU6szOX62Q/Uv-6mgattNI/AAAAAAAADYw/x-ZaGrt81iQ/s1600/Nursing+Class+1955+Martha.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SoU6szOX62Q/Uv-6mgattNI/AAAAAAAADYw/x-ZaGrt81iQ/s1600/Nursing+Class+1955+Martha.jpg" height="200" width="196" /></a> <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I remember Martha often coming out to our house for dinner. She and my brother shared a birthday - June 5.<br />
<br />

</tbody></table>
We all remained close to Martha for many years and I remember her being at our house in Rocky Ford, Colorado. She lived in Walsenburg, Colorado and later in Pueblo, Colorado. I remember her commenting one time that "I am older now than my mother was when she died." Her mother died at the age of 45, when Martha was only nine years old. Her mother's birthday was the same as mine, Nov. 8.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GKLPJDz-1PE/Uv-5onGaczI/AAAAAAAADYM/-p8vZYhoaR8/s1600/Scan-140215-0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GKLPJDz-1PE/Uv-5onGaczI/AAAAAAAADYM/-p8vZYhoaR8/s1600/Scan-140215-0001.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a><br />
Martha was very excited when she met Otto Espander, a widower in Walsenburg and they were married May 8, 1970 when Martha was 50. But sadly, Otto passed away June 9, 1971. Martha lived in Pueblo the remainder of her life. She died August 17, 1996.<br />

<span style="font-family: "Lucida Sans","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Edna Amanda Egli was
born on February 16, 1900 in Manson, Iowa. She was the fifth of eight children born to <a href="http://rita-chipschunksagenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2013/03/wedding-wednesday-peter-and-annie.html" target="_blank">Peter and Annie Peterson</a>. Three sisters, Minnie, Sylvia, Delphia, and
one brother, Floyd, were older than her and when she was born they were 8, 6, 4

she was expecting again. Her younger siblings were Sanford, Lillian and Hazel.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

every so often up until 10 or 12 years. (I) would go home for school and back

<span style="font-family: "Lucida Sans","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In spite of the time
spent in Cherokee, Edna detailed lots of memories of her life in Manson as a
young girl. Her uncle built their house on “Swede hill.” Her dad worked as a
clerk in the grocery and dry goods store. They had a barn with a cow and
chickens so they had plenty of milk, cream, butter and eggs. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

their shoes. The Peterson family faithfully attended Augustana Lutheran Church
in Manson. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Pete was known for his controversial political views. But that is not what I know about him. [If you want to know more, there is a lot of information on the internet - just Google him!] What I know about Pete Seeger was that in 1963 my mother bought an album called Children's Concert at Town Hall. I don't know what made her buy it and I don't know what she thought of his political views but she liked having music for us kids to listen to. I so vividly remember laying on the floor in our old farmhouse south of Greensburg listening to the record player.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eMSsudO0Nno/UvMFJIU2CXI/AAAAAAAADXs/cxcDnWZf3-M/s1600/pete+seeger.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eMSsudO0Nno/UvMFJIU2CXI/AAAAAAAADXs/cxcDnWZf3-M/s1600/pete+seeger.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We loved listening to<br />
"Henry My Son"<br />
"Here's to Cheshire, Here's to Cheese"<br />
"Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal"<br />
"I've Been Working on the Railroad"<br />
"Riding in My Car"<br />
"Put Your Finger in the Air"<br />
"Michael Row the Boat Ashore"<br />
"Be Kind to Your Parents"<br />
"This Land is Your Land"<br />
and others.<br />
<br />
But our favorite song was "Abi Yoyo" - more of a story than a song and we listened to it over and over.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Years later I had the privilege of seeing Pete Seeger in concert at <a href="http://www.bethelks.edu/" target="_blank">Bethel College</a> in North Newton, Kansas. Pete Seeger's antiwar sentiments were right in line with the Mennonites. At one point he asked those of us in the audience to sing for him because he knew Mennonites could really sing acapella. So we all sang a song that we knew as "6<span style="font-family: verdana;">0</span>6" but was really called "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNV_Vc839Ng" target="_blank">Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow</a>." (This links to a pretty good video - I'm sure there are <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlx7zVsiavc" target="_blank">others</a>) It is a beautiful song and especially when sung acapella by a large group of Mennonites.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I introduced my kids to Pete's songs and we discovered a book in the library "The Foolish Frog" and the song that went with it. My kids loved it. Nothing sticks in your memory quite like music. Farewell to a great musician. You will be missed.<br />

His ability to draw was not the only talent he had. While he was in 1-W service in the early 50's he worked on a couple of different hobbies. He lived in Pueblo, Colorado, near the hospital where he worked.<br />
<br />
I am not sure how he learned to do leatherwork or who taught him but he perfected his skills during the years in Colorado. He made purses, belts and billfolds. This photo was in the Pueblo paper.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We still have a few of the things he made -- mostly things he made for mom [Phyl] or himself. But I don't think this beautiful purse has ever been used.<br />

It is lined with turquoise suede.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He gave things to his family and his cousins and he sold things to people sometimes too. Often people would request something to be made and personalized. He also made a purse and put it in the hospital gift pool at Christmas one time. He talked about it in his letters to mom. </div>

He began drawing when he was very young. These were drawn in December of 1942 when he would have been 10 years old. You can see he was influenced by the news.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1J2Ao1cZl1c/UkN5APrF2II/AAAAAAAADSw/FVVB2cFj4Kc/s1600/double+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="409" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1J2Ao1cZl1c/UkN5APrF2II/AAAAAAAADSw/FVVB2cFj4Kc/s640/double+up.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QBZBT0-d7lA/UfmRd0syaGI/AAAAAAAADK0/_7_QWIBUxmE/s1600/DSC04009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QBZBT0-d7lA/UfmRd0syaGI/AAAAAAAADK0/_7_QWIBUxmE/s320/DSC04009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
He also drew on a grain bin that he walked by on his way to school. Those drawings are a little difficult to see and harder still to photograph but they are still there all these years later.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Se825sVmNRY/UkOQnuCjPOI/AAAAAAAADTI/_Qg0oxs3n4M/s1600/BIN+COLLAGE.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Se825sVmNRY/UkOQnuCjPOI/AAAAAAAADTI/_Qg0oxs3n4M/s640/BIN+COLLAGE.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6zAS92A0cOk/UkOQmJyIqWI/AAAAAAAADTA/KS7yAOy6w5o/s1600/twobin1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6zAS92A0cOk/UkOQmJyIqWI/AAAAAAAADTA/KS7yAOy6w5o/s640/twobin1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
And in high school he was well known for his art. He often drew sketches for posters and programs.<br />
<br />
His yearbook lists a Class Prophecy as follows: "Ken Schmidt, who spent all his high school days down by the creek fishing, now finds himself a broken down artist drawing pictures for little children."<br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: center;">In later years, he would often sketch. He liked to sketch while on vacation. One year dad and mom went to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with my family and I. This is a sketch he made there.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gr4zl7zvEYc/UfmSk9vllDI/AAAAAAAADLc/eLVL3wlydQ0/s1600/KenSchmidt-sketch-cabo+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gr4zl7zvEYc/UfmSk9vllDI/AAAAAAAADLc/eLVL3wlydQ0/s320/KenSchmidt-sketch-cabo+(2).jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
Occasionally as I go through things, I come across a small sketch. It always brings a smile to my face as I remember Dad.<br />

Children and grandchildren and great grandchildren keep up the family news. But sometimes there is a sibling who for one reason or another gets left behind, usually because they didn't have a family. I feel that way about Edna.<br />

My parents, Ken and Phyllis Schmidt dated for four years before they got married. My mom had to finish nurses training [student nurses in her school were not allowed to get married] and my dad was doing alternative service for conscientious objectors. They were both Mennonites.</div>

Anyway it has been awhile since it has been mentioned.<br />
<br />
I just revisited mine this week so I thought I would mention it..<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.memorymedallion.com/" target="_blank">Memory Medallions </a>are small coin-like medallions that have a variety of uses but the most common is placing one on a headstone, which is what I did. Mine was given to me as a gift after my parents died -- my mom in 2010 and my dad in 2011.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZIoINd8N6I0/Uf_I3IdNajI/AAAAAAAADO4/G7fWF0AWAOc/s1600/SchmidtK&P2011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZIoINd8N6I0/Uf_I3IdNajI/AAAAAAAADO4/G7fWF0AWAOc/s320/SchmidtK&P2011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here you can see the medallion in the lower right hand corner.</div>
<br />
The medallion has a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code" target="_blank">QR code</a> on it:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OYjJGlGrA4A/Uf_I36iX4bI/AAAAAAAADPE/fj6HY4LhpkI/s1600/DSC03014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OYjJGlGrA4A/Uf_I36iX4bI/AAAAAAAADPE/fj6HY4LhpkI/s320/DSC03014.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The code can be scanned with any smart phone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When you scan it, it takes you to a web page. The web page is yours to complete however you wish with stories, photos, videos and links. (I need to link to this blog!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is mine:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dyq0QFev42U/Uf_K6-W5RhI/AAAAAAAADPQ/42Rn72FA3Lc/s1600/MemMed.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dyq0QFev42U/Uf_K6-W5RhI/AAAAAAAADPQ/42Rn72FA3Lc/s320/MemMed.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
You can also take a picture of the bar code to use later -- or you can go to the Memory Medallion website and search for the page by the name.<br />
<br />
They are kind of pricey and of course there is always a million comments and questions about being able to use them with future technology and people using them for identity theft etc. but the concept remains pretty awesome. I don't have much on my parents site. No video and only the one picture. I can't help but wonder if putting one on my great-great grandparents headstone, might connect me to distant cousins! I know technology has already connected me with many cousins I would never have otherwise met.<br />
<br />
Another thought - you could purchase one for your own headstone and leave whatever messages you want!<br />

A few weeks ago I posted about this church as a <a href="http://rita-chipschunksagenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/sentimental-sunday-goodbye-to-old.html" target="_blank">“SentimentalSunday”</a> post and mentioned that I would be attending the memorial service for
the church on May 26. I did attend that service and want to share some of that
with you.<o:p></o:p><br />

Sunday morning I arrived early and was able to walk around
the church admiring the beautiful woodwork and windows but also noting that the
building was suffering from mold damage.
There were two rooms full of things being auctioned off in a silent
auction. Shelves, pictures, offering plates, windows, dishes. Great photos can be found on a blog called<a href="http://lifeinclaremont.blogspot.com/2013/05/bergthal-mennonite-church-pawnee-rock.html" target="_blank"> Life in Claremont.</a><br />

free for the taking. I was excited to find a German hymnal and also a
shape-note hymnal. I bid on several
things but at the end of the day, I ended up with a small box and one of 7
large stained glass windows! I must say I am very excited to get it later in
the summer.<br />

The church filled up quickly and even to overflowing. The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bergthal-Mennonite-Church/220303378027281?fref=ts" target="_blank">Bergthal Facebook page</a> says about 350 people were there. The service began with singing.
Beautiful harmonies of familiar hymns. But it was hard not to feel the pain in
knowing that it had been sometime since this many voices rang in these walls.
And it will not ever be so again.<br />
<br />
Charlotte (Life in Claremont blog) also made a great video that includes singing and put it on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaqnJDjGYqE" target="_blank">YouTube</a>. <o:p></o:p><br />

<br />
But one of the most beautiful moments of the day was the message that Pastor Lynn Schlosser gave. I have spent many hours trying to write about her sermon and
find myself quoting nearly the entire sermon.
Her words seem to echo all our feelings and answer all our
questions. Lynn seemed
to know the questions everyone was asking themselves.<br />

dealt with such a mix of emotions these last few years - grief, anger, shame,
disappointment, relief, confusion. In the book of Philippians Paul says, “ I am
confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it
to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” This sounds like truth. We take it
on faith. But sometimes it’s hard to really believe it. How can a church’s
death be a victory? How do we celebrate the loss of someone so dear. Surely
we’ve let all those good people who labored hard to build this church, surely
we’ve let them down. We see through a mirror but dimly.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: .5in; margin-top: 0in; mso-mirror-indents: yes; text-align: justify;">

<span lang="EN" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">But
if we listen closely, we might just hear their voices raised in a song of
triumph. I believe they stand together this day singing a song of hope and
faith. They see what we can only intuit. They are enfolded by a resurrection we
long for, their vision unhindered. I believe they see Bergthal’s good, long
life, the many ways in which God’s Kingdom has been revealed in our midst. They
see also the many ways in which Bergthal will continue to move and live, there
in the realm of resurrection.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

It is a memorial marker to commemorate the Bergthal Mennonite Church that will soon be torn down as I wrote in a<a href="http://rita-chipschunksagenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/sentimental-sunday-goodbye-to-old.html" target="_blank"> previous post</a>. After it is torn down, they will use the cornerstone and some of the bricks to build a base for this marker.<br />

In 1874, Mennonite immigrants from Karlswalde, Russia,
seeking religious freedom and military exemption from service, settled on land
in the Dundee area which was obtained through the Homestead Act and from the
Sante Fe Railroad. The only shelters available to the immigrants that first
winter were railroad box cars. The first buildings, including a church, were
erected in 1875. This first church, a limestone building, was used as a school.
Education was afforded a high value throughout the lifetime of the congregation.
A larger wooden church was built in 1897. The final building, a brick church
dedicated in 1915, was situated one mile north of this cemetery. Like thousands
of rural churches across the country, the membership declined rapidly in its
later years. Bergthal Mennonite was known for its emphasis on peace and service
and was an active member of the Western District Conference until it officially
disbanded in 2013.<o:p></o:p></div>

I thought it might prove to be very tedious. But once I took the plunge (I subscribed to <a href="http://www.genline.com/" target="_blank">Genline</a>), I found the experience to be fun and fairly easy! The records are actually quite good and for the most part very legible. The farther back you go the more difficult the handwriting becomes but I was able to find several generations!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wICBufOsRCw/UYGodYdSIeI/AAAAAAAAC-A/wJq1XY9iwYo/s1600/Anna1869Birth2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="257" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wICBufOsRCw/UYGodYdSIeI/AAAAAAAAC-A/wJq1XY9iwYo/s640/Anna1869Birth2.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Anna's birth record</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My great grandmother, <a href="http://rita-chipschunksagenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2013/03/wedding-wednesday-peter-and-annie.html" target="_blank">Annie Peterson</a>, was born in Sweden and immigrated with her parents. I knew where they were from so that started my search. I searched "Jonkoping Lan, Odestugu" and found Annie's birth record, her parents marriage record, their household registers and a moving out record that said they moved to "Nordamerica." <br />
<br />
American records listed Annie's mother as Malena Swenson - the Swedish records list her as Maja Lena Svensdotter. The household register lists birthdates as well as names, and the women in Sweden always went by their maiden name so it was easier to be sure you had the right couple. Some of the records list page numbers of family registers and that helps as well. Sometimes it requires a page by page search of a hundred or so households.<br />
<br />
Malena's birth record tells me her parents are Sven Mansson and Brita Stina Isacsdotter. By looking for their household register I was able to locate all of Malena's siblings and their birthdates as well as the birth dates for Sven and Brita. And when I looked up those records it named their parents and I was on a roll! It was a little more effort to put into my RootsMagic database - keeping all the names straight - and occasionally I found myself lost - the reuse of names can become a jumble as you look at records for Sven Mansson and Mans Svenson over and over.<br />
<br />
Here is my Swedish pedigree 'at-a-glance' (meaning without all the specifics and citations):<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WmxEHeO049A/UYGgQsFgSFI/AAAAAAAAC9w/6UIyTUf9tQs/s1600/Annie+Pedigree+Graphic.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="512" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WmxEHeO049A/UYGgQsFgSFI/AAAAAAAAC9w/6UIyTUf9tQs/s640/Annie+Pedigree+Graphic.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
And YES! Brita Stina Isacsdotter and Peter Isacsson turned out to be siblings!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Andrew and Malena's household examination record</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
By using resources I found on Genline and on the internet, as well as the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Your-Swedish-Roots-Step-Handbook/dp/1618580809" target="_blank">"Your Swedish Roots,"</a> I was able to read and learn quite a bit of Swedish in the process. I really enjoyed it. Now on to the Danes!<br />
